BANG Showbiz: Day Two

Tuesday, 29 July 2014

This morning I put on my tie dye maxi dresses and a black top. Me and Abby got the 8.19 train again and managed to sit next to each other to Euston. Today, I think the nerves had been replaced with excitement for both of us. I arrived just under an hour early and used Lydia's directions to find the park which is a short walk from the office. It's not huge, but it's a nice place to sit and relax. Just before 10 I headed into the office and was sat at the Italian desk as one of the other girls was sitting where I was placed yesterday. James said on Tuesday's they get a lot of magazines. My first task was to use three interviews from Inside Soap and write as many stories as I could from them. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a soap super fan so this was the ideal task. The interviews were quite lengthy so I spent the morning getting stories from interviews with Lacey Turner (Stacey Branning) who is set to return to Eastenders and Charlie Lawson (Jim McDonald) who is rejoining the Coronation Street cast.

I got five stories from the Lacey Turner interview and three stories from the Charlie Lawson one which I sent to James. He gave me a few style pointers that he hadn't briefed me on when writing about soaps, and I made a few changes and resent them over which he was super grateful for. That took me right up until 1 and just before I went on lunch, James asked me if I wanted to attend a launch party tomorrow night where I would have some interview time with British singer-songwriter Foxes. I immediately emailed back accepting the opportunity before I had the chance to talk myself out of it. A million things starting whizzing around my head and it's one of those things you don't know whether to be more nervous or excited about. It's an incredible opportunity and I'm so flattered James is giving me the chance to pursue what I've always wanted to do. I'll tell you more about the launch and everything tomorrow when I blog about the interview and the party but HOW BLOODY EXCITING.

On a high, I headed to the park to eat my lunch and walked past the prettiest little pub on my way, laden with bright summery flowers. The park looked lovely in the sunshine and it was so relaxing just sitting, eating and reading. Although I did spot one guy doing an extensive yoga routine. And I think I also came across an asthmatic dog so that was a first. Just before 2 I headed back to the office and started writing stories from the third and final interview which James had set me. This time it was with Fabrizio Santino (Ziggy Roscoe) who is a definite Hollyoaks hunk. I wrote five different stories and my overall feedback from James, despite a few pointers, was that I was producing some really good content and he was impressed with how many stories I was getting from the interviews.

He then said I could start doing some research for tomorrow. He emailed me the relevant information from the PR and I set to work googling previous interviews, researching what she's got coming up and writing questions. I told James that I was pretty nervous and he gave me some advice which is so simple, but true: 'At the end of the day it's just another person' which made me feel less panicky about it. Lydia emailed me to see how I was getting on as we spoke quite a lot yesterday which I thought was really nice. She's so lovely and I'd really like to keep in touch and see where she ends up as she's given me some great advice. One of the guys on the Italian desk asked me to proof read a reference for him which was cute. He introduced himself and was really friendly and polite, just as I've found all the staff to be at BANG.

I'm going to do a little more research tonight and listen to Foxes' album. I'm familiar with a few of her songs but I want to try and learn as much as possible so I can get the most out of the interview. I'm probably also going to try on about 26 different outfits in a desperate attempt to decide what to wear. Abby is going to be my plus one and after I've done the interview, we'll enjoy cocktails, canap├ęs and music. I'm definitely going to have a nightmare tonight about my dictaphone losing the recording or not being able to find the building on time, so wish me luck! I'll be posting another daily update tomorrow when I'll have officially interviewed my first celeb. One thing that helps me when I get nervous about these amazing yet terrifying opportunities is that great things never came from comfort zones.

  1. Your work experience all sounds fantastic. I 've never worked in this field so can you explain a bit more about what you mean when you say you got articles out of other articles?

    1. Thank you Charlie. Because BANG are a news agency/wire, they get primary stories but also get stories from other publications. For example read interviews from other magazines and newspapers and write stories from the information in there x
