Heat Magazine Internship: Week Two: Day Ten

Saturday, 14 June 2014

I woke up yesterday morning to even sunnier weather so I decided to wear my new Primark tropical print skirt with a white strapless top, black thick strappy sandals and a red lip. Hannah had messaged me the night before to tell me I didn't need to be in until 10.30 so I enjoyed a little lie in before getting the 9.19 train to Euston. The train and tubes were much quieter than usual as I was travelling later so the journey was nice and relaxed. I still arrived a little earlier than I needed to be there so I went to sit in my trusty courtyard spot to enjoy the sun while I checked my University portfolio mark which had just been posted. Since finishing uni and going back to full-time work and interning, I've kind of forgotten that I've got unmarked work so although I really didn't want to look, I'm happy with my grade.

I went and collected the deliveries and headed up to the office for my last morning. As I said yesterday, I'd been helping Ellen by finding high street matches for five celeb outfits so I carried on doing that. It's quite time consuming as I've found the best way to do it is to look through all the main online stores and find a few different matches for each item so the girls can choose which one they'd like to use. I then called in high res images for the items I'd already found and carried on looking for the rest. Hannah had emailed me about a radio and presenting workshop Lucie was doing for some children who were visiting heat as part of a journalism club, so Lucie came over and invited me to sit in on it.

At 12 Lucie gave the little kiddies a tour of the office and took them round each desk to explain what goes on. It was slightly awkward when Maria had to remove the sex doll from one of the chairs and carried it away with its willy hanging out. Luckily I don't think the kids clocked it. They were all year 5 and 6 and so so cute. They all write for a school newspaper and they're all eager to explore the world of media and journalism. I then went into the radio studio and met Sarah Powell (she does the 4-7 heat radio show every day) and she was so so lovely. Really friendly, chatty and welcoming. She gave the kids a short workshop and allowed them to produce their own showbiz bulletin. It was really cute to see how enthusiastic they were and I'm really pleased I got the chance to meet Sarah.

I then went for lunch a little later than usual and made another trip to Primark to return some bits. I treated myself to a McFlurry again (bit of a daily habit) and went and sat in the sunny courtyard. I headed back up to the office at half 2 and did some returns for Hannah ready for the van man. I also carried on looking for the 'Get the look' celeb outfit matches and called in some more high res images. After that I helped Hannah find some images for a piece she's writing for the mag and used Rex Features to source these. My last job of the day was to get some product prices by looking online. This is so that readers can see how much a product is, what it's called and where they can buy it from. I mentioned in Thursday's post that Hannah said she'll put my name in the mag on the page where I found the high street matches and she showed me a print out today which looks really good! It'll be in the Star Style section of the issue on 24th June and I'm so excited to see my name in print! As a trainee and aspiring journalist, it's a great sense of satisfaction and achievement seeing your name beneath your work.

I asked Hannah to fill out my placement appraisal form so I can hand it in when I begin third year. A compulsory part of second year was to complete three weeks of work experience and I think feedback forms are a really good idea. She was so so lovely about me and wrote: "Nicole has been an amazing help to the style team the past two weeks. She has completed every task with a smile on her face and is very polite, friendly and punctual. I have loved having her on the team and we wish she could stay for longer! Her writing for online has been brilliant and required wholly no editing." I couldn't have asked for her to write anything more and I'm glad my enthusiasm and efforts have been reflected in my work ethic. As a thank you, I was given the most incredible goody bag full of treats. As a self-confessed beauty addict this was like heaven to my eyes and if you're interested in what I got then here's all the deets:

Hannah said to let them know my plans for the future as they'd love to have me back. Her and Ellen thanked me for all my hard work, said I'd been amazing and such a massive help during my time there. I was so thrilled that they'd enjoyed me being there and even more so that they want me to go back. I obviously thanked them for having me and being so friendly and welcoming. I've been so lucky to have been given this experience and I'm so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and did it. I've learnt so much during my time there and if anything, it's just reconfirmed exactly what I want to work hard towards. I've met some lovely people who have been so welcoming and I feel very blessed and thankful to have been taught so much, been allowed to contribute and have my work published. A big thank you to heat and the Star Style team, especially my placement supervisor Hannah who was been amazing. She's a genuinely lovely person and I'm glad I had the privilege of working alongside her. After sadly handing my pass back, I left the office ready for a girls night in London with Kate.

Although Kate and I briefly caught up on Wednesday after work, we'd had this planned for a while. We originally planned on going for dinner at Prezzo but as always plans change and we decided we fancied trying our luck at getting cheap tickets for a show. We met at 5.45 and went round a few theatres (with the aid of Google Maps, of course) to ask for prices. We went to Picadilly Theatre where Jersey boys was on and managed to get stalls tickets for £22.50. People would have paid so much more in advance and we'd both heard it was an amazing show so we snapped up two tickets and grabbed some food at McDonald's. Classy meal in London, we know. We got a little bit touristy and got some pictures and then headed back to the theatre for the show. Cue uncontrollable laughter and smudged mascara due to an enthusiastic elderly couple really going for it (dancing in the aisles AND fist pumping). I didn't really know what Jersey Boys was about prior to seeing it but it was amazing and I had such a fun time. We then headed to the pub for a bottle of wine which we took outside. Street drinking is a legit thing in London.

The city buzz is incredible, especially on a Friday night and I don't think I'd ever get bored of it. Everyone's on such a high and excited for the weekend so the atmosphere is amazing. We got charged a fiver for a £15 bottle of wine, met Hungarian boys who sounded American (heart eyes emoji) and then got a rickshaw back to the tube because we somehow ended up in Soho Square surrounded by street urinals and cardboard cutouts of builders. I've ALWAYS wanted to go on a rickshaw and it was genuinely one of the funniest things ever. So so surreal. Even more surreal (okay, creepy) when a passer by touched my leg. It was so sad to say goodbye after such a lovely evening but I had one of the funniest nights in ages and had to refrain from falling asleep on the train home. I've loved interning for heat and being a London girl for two weeks. I'm feeling very content, very happy and very lucky right now.

  1. Wow, that goodie bag! It sounds like you did so well Nicole, I bet it was lovely to read that great feedback and know that you are actually very good at the thing you most want to do. I hope you do some more internships, as I have found this so interesting and want to read about you going to other mags now! I'm glad you enjoyed Jersey Boys too, we went to see that about 6 years ago now and really loved it. xx

I recently completed an internship on their fashion cupboard there. I'm now following you on GFC, I'd love it if you could follow me there too? http://louiseabenamensah.blogspot.co.uk/ xx
