Heat Magazine Internship. Week One: Day Three

Wednesday, 4 June 2014

This morning I decided to dress a little more casual so opted for my black Topshop Joni jeans with a white mesh New Look tee, a silver necklace and my heeled boots. The weather was miserable and raining and there were delays on part of the Northern line so I got the same time train again. Luckily I'm only a few stops on the tube so I suffered no delays. I arrived even earlier this morning so went to Franx cafe across the road from Endeavour house for some tea and toast. It was a pretty basic cafe and nowhere near as fancy as Pure but it certainly did the trick. I flicked through this week's heat mag and completely fell in love with Darcy Oake (BGT illusionist) all over again.

My first job of the morning was finding some item matches for Ellen - one of the fashion ladies. I then had to call in high res images from the relevant PR departments. I was a bit nervous about doing this but all the PR girls I've spoken to from different stores and companies have been super friendly and helpful. Plus, it's exciting being able to say 'Hi, it's Nicole here calling from heat'. Oh, the little things. Next, Hannah asked me and Eleanor if we'd like to compile some summer trends images. Every week the fashion and beauty team have a meeting and pitch ideas, so Hannah let us do our own research so we could give our ideas to Jo (the style editor) in the meeting which was scheduled for 4pm. The girls were so busy so the meeting didn't happen, but it should go ahead tomorrow.

This took me up until lunchtime and me and Eleanor then headed to McDonalds. We don't really chat much during the day as we're both busy completing tasks so it's nice to have lunch together so we can have a proper chat. On our way back we grabbed the deliveries (the girls got big Barry M festival survival kit boxes!) and carried on compiling our summer trends sheets. Hannah was shooting some items for a summer piece in the afternoon and I popped up to the studio to take her some items that arrived and stayed up there for ten minutes. She explained how they shoot images for the mag and I asked her a few questions about how things work and how she landed her job at heat. She started off doing work experience, then interned for a year and has now been working there for four years! It just goes to show that work experience is a foot in the door if you're dedicated and passionate.

In my post on Monday I spoke about writing a 'Who wore it best?' piece and today, it was published on the website which you can read here! It's so exciting seeing my name next to it and it makes me proud that Hannah thought it was good enough to appear online. It may not seem like much but to me it's a massive achievement and I'm just hoping I'll get more bits and pieces published online. I wrote another one on Monday which was uploaded but there was a system error which restricted it from appearing online, so as soon as it's live I'll post a link. I then started working on another 'Who wore it best?' piece which will hopefully get published too. I really like the writing  style of heat as it's very fun, playful and tongue and cheek so it's nice to be able to adhere to that kind of tone when I'm writing.

There wasn't much else to do after that as all the girls were busy finishing pieces for next week as their deadline is on a Wednesday. Hannah said the rest of the week should be busier as there will be more bits for me and Eleanor to work on. Ready to hear me talk about fangirling over Lucie Cave again? She came round and handed out Take me to Topshop lucky girftcards. We exchanged five words consisting of 'there you go' (her) and thank you! (me) so we're basically well on our way to being bessie mates. I just love her. She seems so friendly and humble. Another one of her weddings blogs for Grazia was published today which I read on the train home which you can read here. She's hilarious. Back to the Topshop lucky giftcards. Each one has a symbol on which is worth either £5, £10, £20, £50, £100 or £250. You have to spend a minimum of £20 in store to claim your prize but considering the whole office basically had bow tie symbols, I'm guessing we've all got a fiver...

And that's about it for day three in the heat office. If you haven't read my previous heat posts, you can read about day one here and day two here.
