Online Shopping V In Store Shopping

Friday, 23 August 2013

Today I thought I'd throw a little bit of a discussion topic into the mix. There's one definitive thing all us bloggers have in common, and that is that we LOVE to shop. But what sort of shopping takes the title? Do you prefer shopping from the comfort of your own home with a large array of stores at your fingertips, or do you love walking round the shops where you're able to swatch until your heart's content? This for me is a really hard question because I genuinely love both. Typical greedy thing for a blogger to say.

In order to try and narrow down my favourite form of shopping, I'm going to try and list the pros and cons to each. With online shopping you have so much more choice which is every shoppers dream. I mean, everything is usually in stock and there's so many more colours, shades and choices to choose from. Another great thing with online shopping is that you can be as lazy as you want. I usually online shop late at night in my pjs snuggled in bed with a cuppa. I think I'd get some funny looks if I rocked up in Superdrug in my onesie, although I'm sure it's been done! You don't have to wear easy clothes so you can try 12 different pairs of jeans on, you don't have to bear the insanely long queues on a Saturday afternoon in Boots and you certainly don't have to walk behind a swarm of irritating people who think it's acceptable to walk round the shops as if they're on a leisurely nature trail in the countryside.

But, although there's so many wonderful things about online shopping, I also have some bugbears. Call me tight, but I absolutely hate paying for delivery. I can deal with the £1.95 super saver delivery from Missguided, but when it stretches to £4 or £5, I tend to close the page unless it's something reaaally gorgeous that I can't get my hands on in store. Saying that, some online stores have the option of in store pick up which is fab. You can order exactly what you want online, collect it in store, and if it's no good, return it there and then. Another bugbear with online shopping is inaccuracy. I remember ordering some items from MAC a few years back and the colours were nothing like they appeared to be online. It was probably my own fault for not swatching at the counter beforehand, but still, it was annoying. Sizing is also an issue with clothes so maybe shopping in store is the better option.

There's something so satisfying about wandering round the shops, getting some goodies, taking them home, emptying them all out onto your bed and re-looking at everything you bought. You can compare all the offers at the same time in store and you can test and try whichever products take your fancy. When it comes to clothes, you can try on different sizes to make sure you get the best fitting one, and it's nice when you get to make a day of it and grab a coffee mid shop. I'm such a girl - I spend too long in the changing rooms, I take 20 minutes to decide which lipstick I want and end up buying the one I picked up first and I can only really manage to tackle about two shops in two hours, oops, sorry Ciaran! Just before I try and round this up, I can't possibly leave without mentioning the most obvious downfall of in store shopping - carrying, or lugging should I say, all the bags around as well as your handbag. Who wants an ugly red mark on their arm for hours on end? Not me. Now if someone could carry them for us, that would be perfect. If only...

Call me boring, but I'm going to have to sit on the fence with this one because I can't decide which is better. If I really had to choose then I'd go in store, but online offers so many more opportunities and choices that I can't favour one over the other. Okay, so I know I keep changing my mind, but I'm a very indecisive person so it's inevitable really. Maybe you can sway me with some of your opinions.

Do you prefer online or in store shopping? I'd love to know your reasons.

  1. I like online shopping, but the only downside is that you can't try on the clothes and sometimes sizings are weird!

  2. I love any form of shopping! Who doesn't! But going to a make-up counter and swatching make-up all over your hands or any visible part of your body is just the best bit! I think Im more of a store kinda girl, but I do like an online bargain!
