Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrub Review

Sunday, 27 January 2013

After trawling the aisles of Boots I failed to find anything other than an overload of flavoured lip balms and tinted Vaseline's. I wasn't looking for an intense moisturiser, I'm a regular Vaseline user but however religiously I apply it, I still suffer with dry lips. I wanted an exfoliator specifically for breaking down the dry, chapped nature of my lips in a bid for them to appear soft and nourished. There's nothing worse than having to entirely wipe of your lip gloss during the day and reapply it due to the flaky and unattractive remains.

I used Google to try and aid me in my search for an intense lip exfoliator and this is when I discovered the Lush Lip Scrub. I hadn't found any other products online that seemed to appear to offer any other properties than moisturisation, so I decided to purchase the product the next time I went shopping. As they say - the proof is in the pudding.

There were three flavours to choose from when I entered the Lush shop which were bubblegum, popcorn and mint julips. It was a toss up between the bubblegum and popcorn, but when I undid the lids of the tester pots, the intense pink won me over straight away. £5.25 later I was at home and ready to test this product out for myself.

The scrub comes in a small circular transparent pot with a black lid, very classic and simple which I like. With the Lush logo on the top and their iconic black and white background and writing combination, it is easy to spot amongst your other cosmetics. The back of the pot instructs you to 'scrub and buff your lips to softness, lick off the excess then apply your favourite Lush Lip Scrub' which is what I proceeded to do.

I followed the instructions and scrubbed the mixture onto my lips vigorously. It's a weird sensation the first time you apply it but further applications feel more pleasant. The grainy texture rubs in easily if you spread it onto your lips and rub in circular motions. The bubblegum infusion is a powerful and sweet scent which smells very much like a slush puppy - no complaints there! After I had efficiently rubbed and buffed, I got a wet flannel and wiped the excess mixture away. Already I could see that my lips looked soft, flake-free and healthy.

Unfortunately I didn't have the Lush lip balm so I settled for Vaseline instead which worked well in combination with the scrub. The next morning I was more than satisfied with the results as my lips hadn't dried out through the night. I repeated the same process before applying my make up and my lip gloss lasted longer than usual with no evidence of flaky skin on my lips.

The lip scrub is handmade with fresh ingredients and contains Castor Sugar, Organic Jojoba Oil, Methyl Ionone, Flavour, Colour 45410 and Colour 45380 which I assume give the scrub its bold and striking colour. The fact that the lip scrub is made in England and contains no preservatives is a bonus because it's always satisfying knowing that pure and natural ingredients are being used, especially in cosmetic products.

Overall I really rate this product. Everything from the packaging and texture down to the colour and smell was pleasant. The price might seem a bit steep, but considering the excellent result of the product, I can justify spending this amount of money on it every few months. The content in the 25g pot has barely even decreased after around 6 uses, so I imagine that it will last for an incredibly long time. With this product, you certainly get what you pay for.
