Jack Reacher

Thursday, 3 January 2013

About three years ago I became addicted to Leed Child books, who focuses on a character called Jack Reacher. He's released 17 books which aren't in chronological order, which I like because it doesn't mean you're subject to reading them one after the other. I can't say that I've read them all, but it's my new year's resolution to get through the rest! I was quite a bit younger when I started to read them and I loved them, so I can imagine that I'll love them even more if I start up again. So, being a lover of the books you'd have thought that I'd have been thrilled when rumour had it that there would be a film made out of one of them. Well, you're wrong.

Jack Reacher is 6 ft 5, weighs about 220 lbs, has blue eyes, a military background and is a very private man. He doesn't have commitments or routine, he goes from one coffee shop to the next, dumping one set of clothes and buying another. He doesn't carry any ID on him because he likes to be elusive, and he is most definitely a head-strong and independent character. So imagine my disappointment when I find out that Tom Cruise is being cast for Jack Reacher. This is nothing against Tom as an actor, but how can a 5 ft 7, brown eyed and well groomed man possibly play him.

Reacher is a rough and ready, tough, emotionally detached figure who is powerful. It genuinely puts me off going to see the film when I know Tom Cruise is NOTHING like Reacher. I know the camera can do clever things for height and weight, but the sheer fact that I know how Reacher should be played, makes me unable to accept Tom Cruise as a worthy Jack Reacher. I don't want to ruin my Reacher experience by going to see the film and being hugely disappointed, which I know I will be. I'm sorry Tom, but you'll never be as good as the original.
